Where You Lead, I Will Follow
Why I Love Gilmore Girls
Gilmore Girls.
You have probably heard of it (if you have not: 1) what planet have you been living on 2) all seasons are on netflix, go watch it).
It is a beautiful and hilarious show about family, friends, love and coffee. Mostly coffee.
I watched all seven seasons a couple years ago and loved every second of it.
Rory is everything I want to be: funny and smart and a bookworm. But she is also everything that I am: nervous for the future, unsure about life, lost sometimes and self conscious.
I saw myself in Rory, unlike I had ever seen myself in a character.
Hermione is the closest other character I can think, but even she is an actual witch.
Rory was beautiful and brave and lost.
Lorelai was a firecracker from the very beginning, from the very first cup of coffee at Luke's. She was strong and unafraid and she was kind. She always makes me laugh. She has always reminded me of my own mother (who also has a sort of addiction to coffee; I was destined to end up like that anyways).
There's Luke, who literally never fails to make me smile. His sardonic humor is exactly my type. And what I love most about him is how much he cares. He cares for the town, for his diner, for Jess, for the people, for his daughter, and most of all for Lorelai and Rory. Even if he isn't someone who goes around saying "I love you" and everything, he is the character with the biggest heart.
Emily and Richard are also people who care so much, but are not great at showing it. But they love those girls.
Sookie (I mean it's Melissa McCarthy, we can't really get better than that) is the best friend anyone could ask for. She's supporting and kind and so funny.
Kirk is weird and always has crazy ideas.
Paris is driven and intelligent and honestly kind of scary but in the best way.
Dean (Sam?) is sweet and everything Rory could have wanted for her first boyfriend.
Jess is mysterious and dark, but also really sweet. And he reads a lot of books (+100 points).
Logan is caring (most of the time) and witty.

To be honest, it has been a while since I have even watched a lot of Gilmore Girls but it is still a part of me. It changed me, which is dramatic to say but really it did. Every book, show, movie, any story changes me in some way. And Gilmore Girls was particularly impactful.
I mean, it is why I finally started drinking coffee. Which is obviously a very big deal.
The most important thing to me about it is that within the show and the characters and Stars Hollow, I found a home. It is the show I come back to on bad days. It is the show I will watch reruns of whenever they're on. It is the show I watch with my sister.
This past week, I was tired and overwhelmed by school, but I came home and I watched Gilmore Girls. I wore a shirt that said Luke's Diner. I drank even more coffee. And it made me a little happier.
A little calmer.
There are so many shows that I love, but not as many that give me this sense of comfort.
I saw a video on Youtube the other day about a list of comfort reads. Books that she rereads when she's had a bad time or just need to relax. This show is that for me. Even if I forget about it sometimes, I can always come back and fall right back into Stars Hollow with our Gilmore girls.
In this show I have found another home, because in this show I have found another family.
Because at its core, this show is about family. And in my life, family is the most important.
