If You Like This Show/Movie, Read This Book

  • If You Like This Show/Movie, Read This Book

    Hello and happy Sunday!
Today I am writing a fun bookish post! I hear a lot of people say they don't like to read because it is boring, but that is so not true! Reading a book can bring anywhere in time and space to go on an adventure with anyone from Queen Elizabeth the First to a futuristic space pirate. Reading is the closest thing we have to magic.
So today I wrote up some book recommendations based on some popular TV shows and movies! I hope you enjoy!

    • Doctor Who
      • A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
        • Time travel. It can get complicated in any story, but it is always such a fun aspect of a story to read. In Doctor Who there is endless adventure all over time and space, with wicked gadgets and technology following all along the way. For me Doctor Who is about heart, which is something at the center of A Thousand Pieces of You. Marguerite is a chracter to fall in love with, as she travels through alternate realities and time, trying to discover the truth and saves those she loves. While there are some differences in the world and story, I think the very brave Doctor and Marguerite would get along quite well.

    • Star Wars
      • Zenith by Sasha Alsberg & Lindsay Cummings
        • I couldn’t decide whether to relate Zenith to Star Wars or Star Trek (I love both), but I think Star Wars fits better. Star Wars, at times, is about fighting a war you think cannot win but trying anyways. The characters in Zenith are the same. Andy will push through anything to save her crew. Not only do these stories share fantastical settings in space and some badass fight scenes, they both feature the love of finding a family in those around you and fighting for that love.

    • Buffy the Vampire Slayer
      • The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
        • On the surface, these series are fairly different. Buffy slays vampires and Clary’s best friend is a vampire. But I think at their core, they have many similarities. Both stories surround a team of teenagers continually trying to save the planet from a powerful demon. The friendship dynamics in each of these series drive the story forward and create an incredible cast of characters. While the friendships are great, there are also some swoon worthy romances. These stories are character driven and full of adventure, suspense, romance, diversity, heartbreak and so much more.

    • Practical Magic
      • The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
        • If you do like Practical Magic, I probably reccomend reading Practical Magic (which I hope to do this Halloween). But if you are also looking for something else, I highly reccomend The Wicked Deep. Tonally these stories are different, but the lore and excitment of witches is featured in both of these in a way that is so fun to experience. Both stories features sister witches that go through some serious trials (pun intendeed) and tribulations. I would say if you are looking for an intriguing Halloween read, The Wicked Deep is a great choice.

    • Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies
      • Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
        • The appeal for Marvel movies often has to do with the great action of the plot. Ready Player One is packed full of action, great battles with the Iron Giant and Godzilla robots. Both superheros and Wade Watts (a great superhero name) strive to make their world better, fighting for the good guy. Superheros and Wade Watts, a superhero in his own way, both stand for a world that is always improving.

    • Reign
      • Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst
        • There may not be alot of people here who ever watched Reign, or who has ever heard of this author but I promise they’re both worth your time. Reign follows Mary Queen of Scots in her early years, years before she was ever imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth. One of the aspects of this show I love the most is the magical realism to it. There is a magic that exists in their world, but it does not overpower the story. Of Fire and Stars focuses more on the magical element, but it still has a simialr feel. Both stories feature amazing female characters who are worth so much more than they’re pretty face. They are strong and pwerful and will rule their kingdoms with an incredible strength.

    • Black Panther
      • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
        • African legends and mythology is not a topic often seen, but both these stories feature it in the most fascinating and excitng way. Exploring something that in unknown to me led me to fall in love with both of these stories. Also, Black Panther and Children of Blood and Bone both have an amzazing cast of diverse characters. Children of Blood and Bone does have more of a magical element to this story, rather than the advanced science of Black Panther, but each adds a lot of interesting depth to their respective stories' world building.

    • Criminal Minds
      • My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf
        • The serial killer Jeffery Dahmer is mentioned throughout the Criminal Minds series, often comparing the unsub to him in some way or another. Criminal Minds always looks at the story from the point of view of the case currently happening, but the My Friend Dahmer graphic novel is unique in that it looks at Dahmer before he ever killed anyone. He focused on the kid who never fit and struggled with a lot of internal hatred and confusion. The graphic novel was written by someone who knew Dahmer in high school, offering a very interesting perspective into the world before the Dahmer name would become infamous. If you like the profiling in Criminal Minds, My Friend Dahmer would be a very interesting read.

    • Gilmore Girls
      • To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
        • Almost my whole list is some sort of fantasy or sci fi, so I had to include some contempory too. Gilmore Girls is my favorite show because of the family feel of it (see entire post about why I love Gilmore Girls here because I really love it that much). It is about a mom and daughter and the family they have built for themselves. It is feel good, but with plenty of heart racing drama. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before has so much of this same feel. It is about a dad and his daughters, finding their way through the world. The sister bonds in this book are so amazingly written, they feel so real and beautiful. Plus the romance is just as swoon worthy as all the ships thorughout the years in Stars Hallow. #teamdeanjesslogan #seriouslyIcannotdecide #butprobablylogan

    • Game of Thrones
      • A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
      • This recommendation might be the loosest connection, but I think there are some key aspects that connect them. Although I have not finished Game of Thrones, I have seen enough to see the high fantasy and excitement in the world. There are Kings and Queens and magic and wars, all colliding into choas. A Court of Thorns and Roses has many of these elements as well. Their land is ravaged by curses and wars, with magic playing a large part of it all. Plus Feyre and Daenerys are both such badasses.

Thank you for reading.
