To All the Boys I've Loved Before
*this post will contain spoilers for the movie/book
On August 17th To All the Boys I've Loved Before and I am so in love with this movie.
A few months ago, I read the three books of the series and fell in love with Lara Jean and her story. I see so much of myself in her. She is timid, but she still knows how to be confident when it is important. She loves romance, but does not quite know how to actually live that fantasy. She loves her sisters and wants to protect. She gets scared. She gets brave.
She is probably one of my favorite characters of all time now.
And now Lana Condor has so perfectly brought that to life. She is everything I wanted to see in Lara Jean on screen. She brings everything of the character in the book to life.
The idea of love letters that were never meant to be read being sent out seemed an odd story at first, but it leads to such an incredible story. As each boy approaches her and asks about the letter, she digs herself deeper trying to run from her problems. Until she realizes she needs to just face it head on. And she does, in some very cute black platform combat boots.
Everything about the book series made me fall in love with it, and the movie was able to perfect capture that.
Adapting books into film can be hard, and sometimes it can just be completely ruined. But this was perfect. It didn't matter that a few scenes were altered or left out, it only makes sense with the time constraint of a movie. This film captured the essence of Lara Jean and her life. It portrayed her relationship with her sisters beautifully in a way that just perfectly reminded me of my own sisters. The entire family worked as such a seamless unit. As Lara Jean deals with each of her letters' recipients, the characters are perfectly introduced and left to still be their own well rounded character. From the boy next door/ older sister's boyfriend Josh and UN John. The slow growth of fake relationship to real love with Peter was so perfectly subtle in the movie, just as it was in the book. The dynamic between Lara Jean and Peter was beautiful to watch blossom on screen as their relationship evolved. Also how *swoon* worthy is Peter. I could not have imagined a better actor to play him; it was as if he had stepped right out of the pages.
And, I mean. Look. at. him. He is so gorgeous. And so perfectly Peter. Sweet and confident and considerate. And most importantly, you can so obviously see how much he loves Lara Jean. Plus that kiss in the hot tub had us all literally falling over with feels, let's be real.
Overall, as far as book adaption goes, this movie ranks very high on my list. And I plan to watch over and over again for at least the next 3 months.
Not only did this movie represent the book in a way that makes my bookish heart sing, it was a movie that everyone can love. And it is a movie so many people can see themselves in. Lara Jean is a Korean American at the forefront of a romantic comedy, and I can't imagine something more amazing to put out into the world.
In case it isn't obvious yet, I absolutely loved this movie. I will give it 5/5 love letters. Pun absolutely intended.
Now, back to watching this over and over again in hopes of Netflix adapting the second and third books.
Word of the week: beloved
